From 21 to 28 September 2025, Kigali hosted the first UCI Road World Championships held in Africa. A record 36 African nations were on the start line.

For the first time, the UCI Road World Championships were held on the African continent, in Kigali, Rwanda, from 21 to 28 September 2025. According to the UCI annual report, 734 riders from 108 nations took part, including a record 36 African countries. A year earlier, in Zurich, fifteen African nations had been present.

Eight African nations were among the fifteen in the team time trial mixed relay.

The best African results

  • Junior women: Ethiopia's Tsige Kahsay Kiros finished 7th in the road race despite a mechanical, the best African result of the Championships.
  • Elite women: Mauritius's Kim Le Court finished 8th, a first for Mauritius in the top ten of an elite World Championships race.
  • Elite men: Eritrea's Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier finished 30th.

The elite titles went to Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar, who won solo after attacking 103 km from the finish, and to Canada's Magdeleine Vallières Mill.

"The first edition of the UCI Road World Championships in Africa is historic, both in terms of its location and its scale," said UCI President David Lappartient.
